Even though technology these days sometimes borders on the fantastic, it still hasn’t developed to the heights of humanity’s imagination. Though our space travel is in the infant stage, we’ve been dreaming about the future since we first looked up at the stars. While we sometimes imagine other worlds and other races of beings, it is especially intriguing to consider what could happen to our own human race, and our own planet of origin, Earth. Here are five science fiction novels with interesting perspectives that do just that.

Way Station by Clifford Simak

Clifford Simak wrote a lot of science fiction in the ’50s and ’60s, and I also recommend his series of short stories, City, an alternate time line about our future going to the dogs (literally). But Way Station remains his most popular work. In 1960’s Wisconsin, Enoch Wallace lives a lonely existence. He’s been keeping to himself his entire life, which has been a long one, reaching back to the Civil War. The reason for his secrecy: Enoch has been chosen by aliens to maintain an interplanetary way station on Earth.
